additional note: with the ALSA 1.0.x and 2.6.x kernel, you don't have to specify these redundant aliases. these aliases are built in. hence, you'll need only two aliases per card, such as alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1 alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1 the former is for ALSA and the latter for OSS emulation. for the second card, alias snd-card-1 snd-hdsp alias sound-slot-1 snd-hdsp alsaconf script will check and determine them automatically. unfortunately, 2.6.x main tree still doesn't include the latest ALSA patchset, but mm tree does.
