Got it - for some reason the modem has dissapeared.
# aplay -D hw:1 -c10 -f S24_LE -r48000 -traw /dev/urandom

aplay: pcm_write:1088: write error: Input/output error
There is a delay before the error.
So far no audible output or any indication on the UA1000
(it has output state lights)
Hope there is a clue here.
