I don't know and I do not expect 'aplay' to continue as if nothing
happened, however, restarting ALSA should should cure the problem, i.e.
what is described here:

Better yet, it would be nice to see per device reinitialization
in ALSA.

I think this should be possible - in the end, hot plugging a device
for the first time is device initialization when ALSA is already up
and running, right ?

If so, why it can be done any number of times ?
