No change at all. The ac3 stream still has so many drop-out it's quasi
mute.

Here's the command (with output) that I used:
   $ ac3dec -C en.ac3 
   Using PCM device 'plug:iec958:{AES0 0x2 AES1 0x82 AES2 0x0 AES3 0x2}'
   AC3 Stream 48.0 KHz 384 kbps

I've also tried PCM output on spdif, the sound is severely distorted:
   $ ac3dec -D spdif en.ac3 
   2.0 Mode 48.0 KHz 384 kbps Complete Main Audio Service
   Using PCM device 'spdif'

On the other hand, the front analog output works fine:
   $ ac3dec  en.ac3 
   2.0 Mode 48.0 KHz 384 kbps Complete Main Audio Service
   Using PCM device 'default'
