I would advise a beginner to switch to a better distro rather than
struggle with kernel building.

But it looks like Fedora is no better - according to
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-January/msg00538.html,
they ship the kernel module but not the firmware!

Maybe Ubuntu supports the hardware OOTB?
