Ubuntu has a special snd-hda-intel module in /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel. This module references are being mixed with the ones of the module you compiled. If you look carefully in the error messages in dmesg, you can see the confusion between the 2 modules.
This module has to to be removed or renamed in order to have the depmod execution not mix this module references with the ones you compiled from alsa 1.0.15 or hg version. There is some links to this in the Ubuntu wiki in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller See Method D: Variant of method B. Suggestion of hand editing the modules.dep file can be cleanly replaced by running depmod again after taking Ubuntu module out of the way or running make install again. A. C.
