That is exactly what you have to do when you use hardware compression -- 
lie about your tape length to amanda.  I'm not quite sure what you mean by 
the second statement.  Since you've set your tape device to the 
compressing device, *all* your dumps are using hardware compression.  So, 
estimate how well hardware compression will work (hint -- it's not 2X), 
and tell amanda that tape length.  For an AIT-1 drive (35GB native), I use 
50GB, and haven't hit EOT yet.
