You are right!  I guess that would be a nice thing to be able to specify in the 
dumptype section.  Something like:

define dumptype root-tar-hw-comp {
        root-tar
        hw-compress on
}

and then have a line to specify the hw compression device:

tapedev /dev/nrmt2m
tapedev-hwc /dev/nrmt2h

So when hw-compress is on it uses tapedev-hwc, otherwise it uses tapedev.  Maybe I'll 
look into this when I get some free time.
