Are they not spam bots? They don't normally reside in channels ie,
they have wierd nicks that changes every few seconds and sends you a
message about a fantastic website or irc server...?

Try UserMode +i (invisible) /quote mode your-nick +i
if it's those spams things and not ppl.
That's also in the User Modes dropdown menu, Invisible?
Do this before you connect to the server, and this should stop the
spambot type messages I think you're getting as it scans for
visible users in the /who or /names, invisible modes hides you from
the /who or /names list unless it's in the same channel(s) as you.
