To update the topic simply use /TOPIC
That will request the server to send out the topic string.
On a personal note i hate not being able to use the topic bar to change
topic when im not an op and the channel is +t. Many networks allows Opers
and other priviledged users to change topics in +t channels without ChanOp
status. Just mho thou.
