Yes, but what he was suggesting was that settings can also be for server
groups - i.e. IRC networks. So for instance, I don't normally use EFNET
servers, just IRCNET. But if I did, I'd probably want to have a different
nick for all EFNET servers than I have for all IRCNET servers. And that's
likely to be the case for a lot of people using IRC. The same applies to
other settings, such as the favourite channels, since channels lists are
comment to IRC networks, not individual servers.
Currently, the only way I can think of of achieving anything quite like
this is to have different preferences files for each IRC network. Not
exactly very user friendly!

True, but as he says, an automatic way to do that would be quite handy;
maybe there are scripts that do that already - I wouldn't be surprised.
He's just asking for a kind of "failover" - so that if you get onto one
server within a particular network and find that it's not working very
well, you can click a button, and a minute later everything's just the
same as before, except you're on a much happier server!
It'd be nice if that happened when you get disconnected as well - if you
could just get it to reconnect and auto-join all the channels you were on
before...
