Or a spreadsheet (MS Excel, OpenOffice, etc.) could be used to do the same
thing.

I was able to take my satellite log in an Excel spreadsheet and quickly
change some fields  - plus add all the ADIF field labels - in a short amount
of time.  My time-consuming task was to break the log down into all the
different station locations I've worked from (almost 100 for my satellite work).
I spent probably 12-14 hours over a couple of late evenings, but it was
worth it.  Now I can make much smaller uploads with new contacts, and not
take much time in doing that.
