Probably. The best way might be to feed in a big logfile and see how it
looks after you've cut off the first part, first & second parts, etc.
Honestly, though, I think the best way would be to flip the model. So,
instead of figuring out the number of parts to cut off, you'd figure out
the number of parts to keep. This is probably slower, however, and there'd
be differences between 2 letter TLDs and 3 letter TLDs. (Because you'd
probably want one more level of depth in 2 letter TLDs.)
Still, this way you're guaranteed that you won't trim data too far. What
if, for instance, my hostname resolved to just student.net, would that be
turned into .net? That might be bad.
