When you ungzipped it by hand, did it wait for a Ctrl-C? I don't know what the
logfile looks like (don't post it here if it's over 10 lines!), but I can't think why
gzip would 'hang' unless the file was corrupt. In which case I'd just remove it and
let the logs run as normal. Then hope this problem doesn't come up again.
