It's tough to compete against the Weather Channel on a weather app. My guess
is that even a lot of the ADC winners are going to be in the same boat in
about 12 months, as the big players move in. It's a tough industry. Java ME
pushed the small developer out within two years. In 2001, the Sprint
Developer program that many developers (including myself)  were excited
about flopped as the vendors moved in and started dominating the market. A
lot of broken promises there.

I don't think all is lost. If you can get a group working on the app, with a
different angle, focusing on a niche part of the market, you may be able to
pull it off. Opening sourcing your weather app and finding like minded
groups of individuals to work on it is also possible (but this is hard as
well). But in the end, its all about who can get the apps in front of the
user. Welcome to the industry.
