This day and age they go out and try to "buy" legislation. Slashdot
ran a few stories in 2005 on this after then Sen. Santorum introduced
a bill to essentially have the NWS XML feed shut down.

He was really cheap; about 4 grants

The bill went nowhere though.

To Landmark's credit (Mother company of the Weather Channel)... They
used to open their wallets when a guy (or gal) in their company came
up with an idea they liked and let him or her do it; no questions
asked. A friend of mine back in Norfolk started Landmark's online
video distribution that way. I am not sure if Landmark still have that
culture, since the old generation got out and retired, with Landmark
being broken into pieces (Virginian pilot, Weather Channel etc.) now.
It's not unthinkable they let some guy or gal go out and run with it
and build their Weather app on Android and cover pay check. It just
sucks they'll monopolize it the old fashioned way.
