You really need at least two devices for testing. High-end 2.1+ devices and a pre-2.0 device. I find that the emulator does a good job of matching pre-2.0 device behavior but you can get really burned trusting the emulator to behave the same for the later devices. I've found differences between the emulator and the device, in everything from NPE's being thrown on the device to completely different layouts in the UI.
