Ah, but that something Market Google Play does.

This mechanism is not for third party use, in other words, the app has to have been originally installed with Market Google Play.

How about "adb install -r" over adb/WiFi? I understand it requires rooting, but that's a hell of a lot easier than creating a custom firmware build.

So how come that programs are updated automatically on my phone when I check the "Allow automatic update" box? All I get is a notification in the status bar that the app has been updated. No user interaction required (apart from the optional dismissal of the status message). One thing I don't know is how this works when the app in question is currently running. But if that is an issue then my proposal with the secondary, monitor app would still be valid.
