Think about it this way: if you had a coffee shop and some jerk-ass walked by your shop and poked his head in the door and yelled "THIS PLACE SUCKS!" with your potential customers and actual customers present, you would want to hit that mofo with banhammer a.s.a.p. before some damage gets done to your business.
It's the same in John's case. He probably doesn't have the time/money/patience/inclination to suffer fools that just negatively post. I think it's a gentle reminder to these dunces that some parts of the web will remain civilized.
