I even considered checking for AdBlockers, but that would really piss them off lol.
For my next product, I plan to find some good affiliate links, and bake a few ads that connect to those affiliate links right into the app.
In fact, I'd like to detect for AdBlockers and serve up affiliate links specifically to products that I think free-software, ads-are-evil folks might be particularly tempted by. No reason to make it EASY for them to not click on the ads. ;)
Seriously, though, it's not like $1 is a huge sacrifice for a smart-phone owner who hates ads; either pay for the app to get rid of ads or watch the ads. And as I said, if something like Dwolla ends up getting widespread adoption, then charging them a quarter would be possible, and I'd be fine with that -- it's probably better than what I'd see with a single ad click anyway (well, an affiliate link can be a lot better, but a quarter is better than nothing).
