Dear colleagues:

I hope all is well with you, and that you are enjoying a very happy New Year's Day. I am writing to provide some additional information about the 2008 petition drive.

I am pleased to mention that as in 2004, we have prepared a webpage to provide information concerning the petition drive. The webpage is located at www.lpva.com/HTML/2008petitionDrive.html. (Please join me in thanking Chuck Eby for his assistance in preparing this webpage.) It contains several items of interest to those who want to help the petition drive. In particular, one may download a copy of the petition (in the form of a PDF of size 180 kb) by clicking on the appropriate link. One may access the petition directly at www.lpva.com/Archives/Documents/Forms/2008LPVaPresidentialPetition.pdf.

Please note that when you print the petition form, it must be printed on legal-size (8.5" x 14") white paper. Page 1 of the petition form must be printed on one side of the paper; page 2 must be printed on the other side.

To avoid confusion concerning the petition, please note that the candidates listed for president (David F. Nolan) and vice president (David P. Bergland) on the petition are not the 2008 LP presidential and vice presidential candidates, respectively. Since we must list candidates on the petition, since the LP presidential ticket will not be determined until the LP convention in Denver in later May, and since we can't afford to wait until later May to start our petition drive, we must use "line-holder" (or "stand-in") candidates on our petition. After our presidential ticket is chosen in Denver, Mr. Nolan and Mr. Bergland will file documents with the State Board of Elections at the appropriate time indicating that they will not serve as the 2008 LP presidential and vice presidential candidates, respectively. Note that we shall not have to change our petition form in midstream. Incidentally, as you are probably aware, Mr. Nolan was a founder of the Libertarian Party (he currently lives in Arizona); Mr. Bergland was the LP presidential candidate in 1984 (he currently lives in the state of Washington).

I have prepared some relatively detailed instructions and tips concerning the petitioning process. One may download these instructions (in the form of a Word document of size 61kb) by clicking on the appropriate link on the petition drive webpage. One may access the instructions directly at www.lpva.com/Archives/Documents/Election/2008PetitionDrivePetitioningInstructions.doc. Thanks for your work for liberty. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance to you concerning the petition drive.

  Take care,
  Jim
