Thanks Jon, I'd be interested in the build service project.
You mention you also build the latest aoe kernel driver. I was on the
Coraid website and I see they are now bundling aoetools with the
drivers:
Starting with version 11, the aoe driver for 2.6 Linux kernels
includes the aoetools. If you are using a driver downloaded from the
above link, you should use the aoetools that come with that driver
instead of getting them from sourceforge.
I'm confused - does that mean Coraid is separately maintaining another
aoetools project, which should be used?
Isn't the aoe kernel driver included in the 2.6.24 kernel. Why the
need to re-build the kernel extension?

I've used AoE with 10.2 and 10.3, and will with 11.0 openSUSE.
I have a build service project which builds the latest aoetools and
aoe kernel driver if you are interested.
If you have the $, I'd really look at starting with a Coraid product
offering. Otherwise, I haven't any experience with 10Gig, only 1Gig.
;-) Good NICs are an absolute MUST.

Now I would like to try ATAoE, but I am a complete linux newbie so
the
first question is which distro should I use. Let me ask the question
differently as I'm not wanting to start a religious battle about
which
is the best Linux distro: which distro does vblade work best with,
does it matter at all or is anything with a new kernel (like OpenSUSE
11, Ubuntu 8.04, others) supposed to work equally well?
