I didn't think the GS recharged the battery at all--just switched to the
power supply when the computer was on, thus saving the battery's capacity.
I know that the GS computers we had at the college I work at part-time,
needed the batteries changed after 5 year's of fairly heavy use.

The ROM 03 had the battery in a holder rather than soldered, and early Mac
LC's used (IIRC) the same battery type so it wasn't hard to change those.
