I usually just copy everything from the hard drive to my ORB cartridge drive as back up. I never use special software to back things up. I also degfragment the HFS partition by copying everything off the partition to the ORB, erasing the HFS partition, and then copying everything back.

The operative phrase here of course is "GS/OS applications." ProDOS is
needed to launch a lot of Apple II software, such as AppleWorks. Since
there's no HFS utilities that I know of that run on a GS, and since most
if not all GS/OS applications are happy running from a ProDOS partition, I
think the idea of having your software and data files in a ProDOS
partition that you can back up, and use the HFS mostly for storage is
probably the safer move.. (I think you can use a Mac to back up a GS's
HFS partition, but I've never tried it.)

Actually lots(not all) of GS OS applications and games can be run from
HFS. But yes, the IIgs will need a ProDOS partion to boot to and load
the operating system from. I have 4 partitions on my IIgs's 350MB
drive... One ProDOS partition for GSOS, 2 ProDOS partitions for games
and apps that wont run from HFS, and one large HFS partition which I put
anything that will run from HFS in.
