If memory serves, the MultiRam IIe is the Ramworks (I or II) -like expanded
memory card from Checkmate Technology. They go into Slot-0 and perform the
duties of 80-column expansion and memory expansion. They had models that had
256k, 512k and 1024k. Early versions of AppleWorks required patches to use
all the memory available (much like RamWorks cards), and I think later
versions of AW recognised it natively (but don't hold me to this.)
Well, that sounds right except that the IIe (original and enhanced) model doesn't have a slot 0 (unless you count the auxiliary slot located right in front of slot 3) - Slot 0 was on the ][ and ][+ models (far as I recollect; Howard or others, feel free to correct me if that's not so). But you should be right that later versions of AppleWorks could recognize auxiliary slot cards (I think it was around version 3 or so that they did).
The big deal with these cards is that they had a low-cost (at the time;
probably $200 or so - can you believe it??) Analog RGB add-on module, so you
could get 80 columns and color from an RGB monitor.
Of course, finding an RGB monitor for that isn't always easy - much easier to find the Composite Color or the IIgs monitors (of course, I believe the IIgs would normally only work with the IIgs).
You could also make a ramdisk out of it by using special software, but it
was MUCH more cumbersome than using a RamFactor or genuine Apple-branded
"Slinky" type memory card.
Yes, since the "Slinky" cards were mostly just good for RAM disk use (though if you loaded up all of AppleWorks on the card, it would load in and out at very fast speeds).
