I am asking because I am not getting the print quality from the Apple
setthat I got when I had the printer hooked up to my Mac Plus. Even when I
thethe print quality in the "Print..." dialog box to the "Best" I notice
toprint quality is still lacking. Not to mention that the software seems
override my settings on the printer itself (where you can set the printAre you using 8-bit applications, or GS/OS applications? The former

print to the serial port, and will override the printer settings
all of the time. The latter should go through the GS/OS driver,
but it is entirely possible that the developer got creative and by
passed it (particularly for earlier software). So which applications
are you using?
I am printing from CoolWriter and Medley. I believe that both are 16bit applications, but I could be mistaken. They both call up the same "Print..." dialog box which I believe belongs to the "ImageWriter" Chooser driver in GS/OS, so that would make them 16bit apps.
As for the driver, I would think that the ImageWriter driver which
comes with GS/OS supports the ImageWriter II. The OS certainly
postdates the printer by several years. But the name may not
indicate such (I don't think the ImageWriter driver for the Mac is
labelled as ImageWriter II, though there is a separate ImageWriter
LQ driver).
Yes, you are correct. So perhaps there is only this one "ImageWriter" driver. So then how do I get the darn thing to print in the highest quality?
GS OS uses bitmap fonts. Your Mac uses true type fonts.
Bitmap fonts are images... sometimes there are more than one size available, but if you try to enlarge past what is available it starts to look pixelated... also, when you print out, it will have just as many dots as it did on screen.
Truetype fonts involve vectors or something(not sure if that's what it's called). Because of this, you can resize them as much as you want, and the fonts will look great. This also means that the print out will look better as it can take advantage of the higher resolutions of nicer printers.
It is possible to use True Type fonts with the IIgs and GS OS, it just requires a bit of software that is still commercially available for sale (not free). I don't have it so I can't help you with getting it working, but I can tell you where to get it. The software is called Pointless. I beleive it installs into your GS OS system folder. Information about the software and where you can purchase it($20) can be found on Westcode Software's website. <http://users.foxvalley.net/~joko/westcode.html>
Also, for the most part, the settings on the printer itself are pretty useless with the IIgs... you have to set them from the print setup or print dialogues from under the file menu of whatever application you are using when you print a document.
