I recall that you told me that your ISP (Verio) is actually a
conglomeration of smaller ISP's. I know from the headers of your
e-mail that your dynamic IP is a dialsprint.net dialup. This
could account for the fact that you are not considered "local"
to your mailserver.

All you have to do is POP-before-SMTP.

Again, all you have to do is POP-before-SMTP. I see AUTH listed
in response to EHLO at GMX, so I assume they support it, but all
I have to do is POP-before-SMTP.

So far, I haven't seen anyone give an example of a server that can
only be accessed using AUTH.
