If you don't dislike a Turbo Vision-like interface try Setedit. It has a huge
number of features

 http://members.xoom.com/stropea/
 http://setsoft.webjump.com/
 or any Simtelnet mirror, example:
 ftp://ftp.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/gnu/djgpp/v2apps/edi*.zip

The above addresses are an excerpt from the editor's documentation

The version i'm currently using is 0.4.41 Available for
both DOS and Linux (and looks the same in both OSes ;-)). For the ones coming
from DOS to Linux (and defeated by Emacs) Setedit is the thing they need.
One last advice for those who may want to give it a try under Linux: If you
want the mouse available in the console, compile the editor from sources. The
precompiled statically linked binary available uses an older version of libgpm
which is not compatible whith the more recent versions of gpm.
