I don't know if it's just javascript or java applets, but I can confirm that it is possible to get infected by visiting a website with IE fully enabled. My local comp guru has experienced this with IE and for that reason alone reccomends Netscape, which is much less prone to infection. Incidently, he was working on cleaning up a Windows system yesterday for a client who had a 40 gig hard drive just crammed with viruses.
