built-in USB audio interface (24-bit/44.1kHz)

The file you tried to play is 16-bit/48kHz, so it might work
with a 24bit/44.1kHz file. This also applies to recording.
If you try to record in any other format that the supported
format, you'll just get an error.
A good program to test this with is mhwaveedit. It's in AUR.
It's the only easy to use program I know that lets you record
from ALSA, and choose all the settings.
Try to record 24bit 44100Hz Stereo PCM. mhwaveedit can also
convert sound files to this format, so you can try to play it.

It also seems that although the Windows software is able to upgrade
the firmware, it doesn't need to load it each time, so you shouldn't
need a firmware loader, but there was new firmare released on
March 17th,2006, which might or might not be in your device.
