The ability to select whole directories or use wildcards here would be 
essential although really shouldn't complicate the implementation much. 

The best point about this idea is that it appears to be backwards 
compatible with current package builds.

One idea I had while looking at ettercap and its multiple interfaces was 
to see if we could save some build time by noting that most of the 
package would be the same between the two parts.  E.g. in ettercap with 
and without gtk interface, all the library files are still the same (I 
think...).  I couldn't see a way to do this without either hacking the 
makefile or getting the functionality included upstream but someone else 
might see something I missed.
