We've had both 93GXs and 15Cs, and yes, the 15C's lid removes without
tools. ADF doesn't easily remove on them, so you can't make the top
completely flat. And once you've removed the lid the hinges still stick
up 1/8-1/4" or so, so I can see why you might still want to remove them.

The Fujitsu M3096GX scanner ADF/Flatbed's lid, if raised straight up,
will slide out to the right. I wonder if the 15C lid do the same.

Which screws? The ones that hold the hinges on or the ones that attach
to the inside of the lid?

FYI: We found a great solution to the 15C lid problem...we took out the
two screws that hold the lid in place and slide the lid off for scanning
from the originals and slide it back into place when we use the ADF.
The lid stays in place fine without the screws.

We scan directly with a Fujitsu ScanPartner 15C and Ariel 3.3. The lid
sometimes interferes with doing big volumes, so we photocopy those
first. The problem with scanning directly with something like the 15C
that has a lid that opens from the back of the scanner is that every
other page is upside down.
