While I agree that other players like Creative, iRiver, Cowon are (possibly) better sounding, its difficult to counter the vast ecosystem that apple has built around the ipod -- lo-tech or hi-end accessories available for it's players is enormous. even the 2nd most popular player (Creative Zen I'm guessing) doesn't have a tenth of accessories (incl. hi-end docks, cables, etc) as the ipod. as for the players a quick check showed they support these lossless formats: creative -- AAC only -- i'm guessing the lossless version alsoipod -- apple losslessiriver -- FLAC cowon -- FLAC, APE cowon offers the best range of formats (lossless and otherwise), followed very closely by iriver. at number three is creative and finally the fourth place in the formats race goes to the industry leading ipod!
