If the group is in the Group form, the server probably just needs to rebuild the group cache. Wait 15 minutes after creating the group and try again. There are 2 parts to adding a group in HD 4 - SHR:Assignment (straight data) and the Group form (special form with server side cache). The menu on populate group config step uses the straight data, but when it updates the user record, it cross-references the group cache.
