On the SSL part of the question, there is a KB - (KM-000000020740) dealing with web services over SSL. We've been having a difficult time trying to get it set up - especially through the Dev Studio. The Admin tool seems a bit more forgiving/informative on the errors. From past experience, DSO would probably be easier to implement.
