There was a hard ceiling on how much the midtier could handle with the 32-bit JVM (because memory was scarce), but that, in theory, is no longer the case with the 64-bit JVMs. Using a 64-bit JVM with the midtier will require that you properly tune your JVM though, if you expect to get comparable performance from it that you do with a 32-bit JVM.
