I have been poking around the web the last couple of days and found this:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312441

It seems to check off all the boxes, and the price isn't bad. And it comes
with a couple nice video cards ta'boot. :)

My desktop is a monster, a quad core i7-3770 over clocked to 4GHz w/ 32GB
of RAM @ 2400MHz so heavy lifting can be done there, but for travel the
above machine looks like it may just fit the bill.

My laptop is a few-year-old Toshiba Tecra M11. It has quad i7, 8gb of RAM
and an SSD hard drive. In VMware Workstation I can run the full ITSM 8.x
suite ok. I give the VM about 5.5 to 6gb and this and leaves very little
capacity for things outside of the VM (MS Office, Dev Studio, etc.).

The ITSM performance is acceptable. I really have to limit the SQL Server
memory but since it is just me and not high transactions it works fine.
There are some operations that take a little longer then I would like but
for the most part using ITSM isn't painful. This configuration is ideal for
a non-ITSM Remedy setup. I have a VM where I do the wwrug.org development
and since it only a custom app runnin on AR the performance is great.

The SSD is nice but I have to shuffle VMs around because it is smaller
(250gb) than a traditional HDD. The hybrid drive is probably ideal. I use
full disk encryption and I think that eats away a little at my SSD
performance.

On the other hand I have a PC with quad i7 and 16gb of RAM and the ITSM
experience is wonderful. I give the VM 8gb of RAM and still have 8 for the
host OS leaving plenty of capacity outside of the VM to do work. When I
replace my current laptop I am going to aim for a 16gb minimum as well since
I am so happy with this configuration.

I did a lot of research and ended up with a Sony S series 15". It was really
light, came with an extra sheet battery, quad core i7, 16g ram, blu ray, and
a 1080p screen. The free PS3 was nice too! Also, going to a Sony store will
get you better discounts. I can run a VM with all modules for ITSM,
Analytics, etc.

To all you road warriors and non-road warriors alike.

Which brands / models have you been using and where have you been purchasing
them? I have always been a desktop kinda guy but am in the market for a
decent laptop.

It'll be running the usual productivity software like Office, etc. As well
as a SQL Server, ARS, Mid-Tier etc.

I have a pretty decent idea of what I am looking for and its been a while
since I have started "one of those threads" and I thought I'd see what
everyone else thought. Thoughts on CPU/RAM/Screen/Battery
Life/Expandability/Keyboard/Options/Looks/Manufacturer Support/&/warranty
are all equally relevant.

Drives are/can be interchangeable and can be compared purely on stats but am
curious about your experiences with these as well but has anyone tried one
of the hybrid drives yet?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178340

I am pretty sure I'll end up with something that has a quad core i7 ,
expanded to 6GB+ RAM and an SSD (or SSD/spinner combo).

Has anyone tried loading everything up on a Surface Pro yet? With only 4GB
RAM I can't see it working all _that_ well with a full ARS install on it.
But with an SSD and a well-tuned install it may not be all that bad swapping
to disk etc. Thoughts? (asking more out of curiosity than anything else)

Thank you!
