It's more the architecture then the crappy food.

All you have to do is go to a franchise show and see the future and or
past.
Most of the franchises now all have the same requirements for locations
and buildings - as towns no longer permit the theme architecture of the
50's/60's.
There's excellent web sites around that capture old gas station
architecture to fast food and motels. Many now gone or going - many
still around.
