You're already going astray there. "...effect we would like..." 
starts a subjective process. Back up and let 'Asbury Park' be your 
guide, not (we, you or I)

Excellent, Keep-it-Simple, apply that to the process also, think 
about it. Lighting fixtures are lighting fixtures, not music, 
instruments, or symbols, glad you re-thought that.
