Dan, With regard to fire protection, the West side is where the need will be now and more so in the future. Just because the density is increasing on the East side does not equate to needing more fire service.
The modern construction being techniques being used on the oceanfront is inherently fire proof, concrete and steel, with integrated fire safety systems. The older neighborhoods (wood frame) will be needing the fire department not the "New City by the Sea".
