Unfortunately, I do not think you're wrong. I think that many people
believe that music would have been a great niche for the city to
build around as part of a tourism plan, but there are too many people
who seem to want to avoid anything that was part of Asbury's past.
It's pretty stupid to me because music was the one thing that
continued to bring people to Asbury after places like the Palace
closed. And whenever Bruce Springsteen held a contest, Cookman
Avenue shops would be filled.

Yet few people put one and one together. Some people have tried to
make music work but unfortunately I think too many people fail to
realize the potential for music in Asbury Park. You mention Austin.
Asbury Park could easily find a niche like Austin or Nashville. In
both cases, musicians flock to those areas just as New Jersey
musicians tend to flock to Asbury. This is still the most vibrant
music scene in the state and it's hardly promoted at all. It
survives in spite of itself.

Imagine what it could do if it really tried?
