Allow me to fill in Netters on a little bit more on this terrible tragedy.
The body of Mrs. Choudhury got lodged in the debris beside my in-laws' house at Paltanbazar, and they were eyewitnesses to the gruesome sight.
The narrow channel of water that passes by their house across from Nandan Hotel, and under the GS Road, has never been cleaned of years of debris, and has created a bottleneck. The fact that property owners around the once marsh -- wetland, have severely encroached into the natural retention pond and narrowed the channel exacerbated the problem, to the point that my in-laws' house got flooded, waist deep, last summer.I an sure others were too. It keeps getting worse. This year they, GMC, started cleaning the debris, but they could not complete the job, because there were numerous dangling cables under the GS road culvert which belonged to the State Electricity authorities and the Post and Telegraph dept. They act as stoppers for floating debris, and worsened the bottleneck. That was news from about a month back. I am not sure of the status as of now.
In the meantime, my mom-in-law, and bro-in-law and family had to move out of their house to a rented apt., so that they won't be flooded in again this monsoon.

Nearly one year ago,a tragic accident took place in which Ms Upamoni Choudhury fell into an open drain in Gandhibasti,which neither had a slab covering it nor any rail guard for protection.Her body was found in Paltanbazar the next morning.The Govt. had announced an ex-gratia grant of Rs.5000 ( that is what the Govt. places price on human lives).
Mr.Phani Sharma,the GMC administrator claimed that he is responsible only for cleaning of drains and revenue collection!!!! An analogy can be made with tinned-fish manufacturer,who claims that he is responsible only for the CONTENS and not for the CONDITION in which the fish reaches the consumer ? Hobo deok.
