Kamal:

secularism is exclusively for the benefit of the minorities.

*** You are right in a way. In an environment where secularism was installed and repeatedly asserted as a national creed there must have been a crying need for it.

What could that need have arisen from? From a society where the majority religion treated the minorities fairly and humanely and their freedom of religion was never infringed upon as Ram asserted vehemently, or in an environment all of the above might have been absent from?

You take a wild guess :-).

And having found the correct answer, you tell me if secularism in India therefore is about not offending majority sentiments, or about protecting minority rights?

Having said that I would agree with your reaction to banning of Pandey's movie, if it were a true depiction of the Christian church's credo or ethos in India. But if it were not, like the portrayal of Bodos as brutal cannibals ( as BSF Chief Musahary spoke of) by the Bollywood movie director Mani whats-his-name, then it would be fair game for those whose sensitivities were offended. By the same token, if the portrayal of the Hindu priest/s were similarly incorrect portrayal/s, the offended Hindus too would be in their right to protest, but unlike the VHP preventing the filming of the episode of Fire by the woman film-maker about the plight of Hindu widows at Varansi. Wouldn't you agree?
