KJD-da,
I think health check ups are very improtant. One of my classmates -from Colombia - I learnt just two days ago --has cancer of glands. He is undergoing ChemoTherapy here now. Early stage so very likely to get cured. He learnt about it just after joing the program last September . I dare say that Harvard's check up - found the problem and saved his life.
Even my check - the fitrst physical one - I was surprised - and dismayed to note invloved my taking of ALL my clothes and putting on a flimsy gown. Later a female NP came for the check up - asked about my previous (non existent sexual life and whether I had used condoms etc) --then grabbed my testicles and squeezed them -- said for prostate cancer test . Later gave me a handout to do the check up for it myself. I would never have known that such a problem existed but for her. Her husband is a senior school teacher in a nearby public school.
Though I was surprised that a female was doing such a check - I imagine females are given physical check up by male NPs too here.
In India this is not possible. Recently a female Air Force candidate - refused to be checked up by male doctors - and was rejected from selection on these grounds.
In a more gross way -- at our school -- girls and boys of high school grade 11 - refused to take of their clothes in front of doctors - of the same sex as the examinee . And we stopped the check up - for fear of getting calls of harrassment of the students - by their parents.
