I like them. I've worked with SMF before, so they should be easy to get
around.

The first thing I notice is how many subforums there are. I've seen that
when forums get too specialized in the subforums, they tend to die of
nonuse or misuse.

What might be good is 3 main forums: News, Support, Misc. I'm not sure
if this functionality is built in, but there is probably a mod
available, that would allow thread tags or icons to be used. They would
be little icons that would denote the general subject of the thread,
similar to tagging a thread by hand with [EXIM], [BUG], [BETA], [REGEX]
and so on. This would allow categorization without subdividing the
forums into tiny pieces.

I'm trying to find a better example, but the Something Awful Forums
(possibly not work safe) are a pretty good example of thread tags/icons
being used successfully:

If you have have subforums that are too specialized, you end up having
threads that can find no home, and much less traffic in the subforums,
both viewing and posting-wise. For example, there are going to be
general MTA integration questions that aren't Windows or Linux specific.
Or perhaps a bug report pertaining to a regex in the latest beta, where
would that go? The RegEx gurus might not hang out in the bug report
forums where the original poster decided the thread would go. Having too
many forums requires a lot more checking out for the latest issues.
