Forking and independent maintenance are certainly options... and they may be appropriate for your case, I don't know.
However, as we can expect the current developers to be doing most feature development and improvements in V2 eventually you will find that the burden of maintaining V1 to be considerably more than to have just switched to V2 initially. So, if you can't summon enough help or interest to continue to maintain V1 then, honestly, your best option is to find a way to switch to V2 before 2015.
