I have **both** WindMobile and Mobilicity. WindMobile gives a full
blown 7.2 Mbps down (close to true 7.2 mbps speed) at Downtown
locations. Upstream is more like 250-300 Kbps. In the Yonge/Finch
area the neighbourhood where I live, upon on the 4th floor we get about
3.2 Mpbs (close to true speed) down, and same 250-300 kpbs up.
However, connection drops every hour or so. My SSH terminal disconnects
and drops. Seconds later it reconnects. Latency of connectivity is
about 180-250 ms to our voip server through Wind.
On my Mobilicity I get 1.2 Mpbs close to true speed, downstream and
remarkably I get about 1Mbps upstream as well! Connectivity within
4-5 KM radius from Yonge/Finch area has been pretty darn consistent.
My SSH terminal has not dropped due to connectivity dropped in tests
done over 48 hrs non-stop. In other words, in 48 hrs, there was no
hiccup. Latency of connectivity to our SIP servers with Mobilicity
was about 100-120 ms. Looks like they have better connectivity with
lower wireless latency.
I did not have to purchase another internet stick from Mobilicity
(approx $100). I simply flushed the firmware on my Wind stick, and
unlocked it to use with any network. At this point, I can use my Wind
Mobile Huawei HSPDA E181 stick, not just with Wind but also Mobilicity.
I think within the GTA area, I will vote for Mobilicity Internet.
Their unlimited plan is half off if you subscribe to one of their phone
plans. Wind service right now I continue to pay $25 for unlimited
usage and will not be renewing service from Wind as of March 1st. My
needs for mobile internet is to basically connect to our SSH server, and
for that 1 Mpbs up and down is sufficient for me. YouTube,
entertainment etc., is for my 15 Mbps cable connection at home. I've
been using both Wind since month 2 of their launch. Mobilicity since
the day of their launch.
Last but not least, VOIP calls have been flawless on both connections
though latency at 250ms to me is a concern for Toronto based calls.
Where as 100-120 ms latency, the results to the trained ear is
definitely better.
