I have upgraded *1.6 to *1.8 on a PIAF box with no apparent problems. Just *
wget* the current 1.8 file and follow the instructions to compile it.
It all turned out okay even though I don't know much about the Linux command
line.
FreePBX can be upgraded from the GUI by using Module Updates, you have to
upgrade in the version order so you may have to do this several times to end
up with the upgrade version you want. I took it as far as 2.8 leaving 2.9
until I hear good things about it .
IMHO if you want a solid production machine and can live without some
leading edge features asterisk 1.6 with freepbx 2.6 is probably the way to
go. In a production machine the golden rule is "don't fix it if it ain't
broke" . I always resist the temptation to upgrade a client if :
A) Their not complaining about anything
B) Their happy with the functions and don't need any more.
C) If you really *have* to upgrade, then build a new machine from scratch
and rebuild the settings/vmail etc. using backup from the old machine and
restore to the new machine. Do a complete cut over (at night ) and get ready
to put it all back out if you have any big problems,
normally you won't but it's good practice anyway. Monitor this machine for a
few days and keep the old machine(or HD) as a backup.
This is the best advise I can give after making many mistakes and losing a
lot of hair over the past 4-5 years with Asterisk.
May the force be with you !
