Well, I have a USB to Serial cable, which then goes into an old (but
good shape) laplink cable using the two serial ends. I wouldn't say
its overly long... but I'm not sure the specs on serial cable length.
I'd say it's about 9ft total?

Using an HP dv1000 running FC5 and minicom as the terminal app. It
just seems strange that everything is fine at 9600 until it gets to
grub, then if I change the emulation to 19200 once up to the boot
prompt everything goes back to being fine. Oh so very strange! :)
