I added ZAPMODS="wctdm" to user.conf and I think this will resolve the problem 
(I'm doing this remotely at the moment so I can't fully test). ztcfg now 
reports that it sees 4 channels and "dahdi show status" sees the board. And 
YES, I have configured the channels via zapata.conf ("dahdi show channels" 
reports the correct default contexts).
